Lahore salutes war heroes

LAHORE: “Today the nation thanks its 1965 war martyrs for sacrificing their lives to protect the motherland,” said nazim Amer Mehmood.

He was speaking at the Hilal-e-Istiqlal flag hoisting ceremony held at Jinnah Hall. He said the Pakistan Army and the nation had stood side by side in the 1965 war. He said the nation was united and those who were trying to create unrest would be dealt with fiercely.

Lahore station commander Brigadier Dawood Rajput, district coordination officer Muhammad Ijaz, naib zila nazim Idrees Hanif were present on the occasion.

On Amer’s arrival, a contingent of the civil defense volunteers saluted him and girls from various schools sung national songs.

Speaking on the wreath laying ceremony at Yadgar-e-Shuhada corps commander Lieutenant General Shafaat Ullah Shah said, “The valiant sons of the soil laid their lives and stood united as one solid edifice to defend their motherland.”

1965 war veteran and Hilal-e-Jurat Brigadier (r) Qayyum Sher also paid tribute to the brave soldiers who rendered their lives to defend the borders. A ceremony was also held at Mazar-e-Iqbal to pay homage to the poet. Garrison commander Major General Shaukat Sultan laid a floral wreath and prayed.

According to a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) press release, air-vice marshal Attique Rafique was the chief guest of the ceremony held at PAF base. Various fighter aircrafts and other equipment were put on display. Students from various schools/colleges thronged the display area.
